Parcels for Reuse or Undergoing Cleanup
FWDA is undergoing final environmental restoration. As part of the planned property transfer to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), the installation has been divided into reuse parcels. Some parcels have already been transferred, including Parcels 1, 15, and 17. Eventually the transferred parcels will be turned over to Navajo and Zuni nations.
Some tenants are currently using FWDA parcels. The U.S. Department of Agriculture uses Buildings 12 and 13 (located within Parcel 11) and the land near the Administration Area for storing packaged food items for the benefit of the Navajo Nation.
TPL, Inc. held a contract to use facilities within Parcels 6 and 22 to “demilitarize” conventional munitions. They took unneeded munitions and broke them down into safe, recyclable materials. The most recent TPL contract ended in March 2007.
In 1995, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) reprogrammed a large portion of the installation for use by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA, formerly known as the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization) to conduct Theater Missile Defense Program testing. MDA used 6,460 acres of FWDA lands retained by the DOD through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Long-Term Permit. The current agreement extends until June 2010.
